For Lechlade, think simple. Go to your Fly Box and muster out the big four:

  1. Black Quill Buzzers.
  2. Bloodworms.
  3. Damsels.
  4. Black and green nymphs (Gold Headed Devil, Montana and Nomad)

The most effective way to fish these first two is to suspend one to three buzzers with an indicator and leave them static. This method will enable you to find the fish at the right depth. If the indicator does not appeal to you, you can simply let the flies drift in the wind and retreive them very slowly.

The next two flies are very effective fished with a sink tip or a floating line with a long leader. Adding weight to the fly can provide a promising effect. Using a long leader, 15-20ft, you can cover the depths and find the fish. A slow figure of eight retreive is best, however, vary your reteive as some fish may like the chase.

If this fills you with horror and you find yourself with an empty fly box, supported by a lack of selection, do not panic, as the next big four will cover all conditions.

  • Sedges
  • Daddy Long Legs.

"Flies for the Rise". Always bring a good selection of Sedges and Daddies as they can often work when everything else fails. They can work as great indicators for the Buzzer, Kiwi style, as well as a twitched dry fly in the evenings. Occasionally on a still evening when a twitched fly is not producing fish, a stripped sedge can induce a hard take.

  • Stalking Bug.
  • White Cat.

Stalking big fish in the margins can be very exciting and is a preferred method for many fishermen. A shorter leader and a weighted bug will get you straight to the fish's depth and hopefully induce a take whilst you are wrapped around the nearest tree avoiding eye contact with the fish.

The white cat is very useful later in the evening as the light fades. Stripped fast, even during an evening rise, can work wonders. However, on dull, overcast days it can have the desired effect too.

Lechlade has a unique micro climate. Some days you may think you're in the Seychelles basking on the flats and others in the Shetlands fighting the gusty, cold wind. Fear not, as the tactics suggested will catch fish in all types of weather.
